Do you like being in the open air, meeting friendly people and you don’t mind people watching while you paint? … then the En Plein-Air Group is for you.
Convenor – Don Kibble - text enquiries ONLY to 0427 472 237
Weather permitting, the Society’s plein air artists meet from 8am for 3-4 hours on the first Sunday of each month at various locations, generally within 10 kilometres of the Kogarah School of Arts. These venues are generally focused on subjects in the St. George area but also visit locations around Sydney. The object is primarily to learn and to have some fun.
An annual ‘themed’ exhibition is held at the Kogarah Library Exhibition Space to showcase our efforts. The theme in 2015 was ‘Hidden Cities’. In 2016 it was ‘Significant Buildings’. The 2018 theme was 'People, Places and where they Gather'. The 2019 theme is 'Celebrating St George'.
Plein air locations have included Federation Pavilion, Centennial Park; Kogarah Fire Station, Kogarah; Primrose House, Dolls Point; One Central Park, Sydney; Nurses Lane, The Rocks; Callan Park, Lilyfield; Kogarah Square, Kogarah; and Kogarah School of Arts, Kogarah.
Artists work in different media and learn from each other and are liberal about what constitutes ‘plein air’. Works can be sketched on site and then completed in-studio. The aim is to capture first-hand the atmosphere of a site, perhaps from different angles and the effects of shifting light.
A promotional flyer is prepared for each site and emailed to members the week before by the convenor, Don Kibble.
